FAQs

  • The Igbo calendar is a traditional lunar calendar used by indigenous Igbo people. It consists of 13 months, each month starting with a new moon. The calendar also features a four-day market cycle: Eke, Orie, Afo, and Nkwo.

  • A new market day in the Igbo calendar begins at sundown. This marks the transition to a new day, following the traditional Igbo method of reckoning days from dusk to dusk. Each market day—Eke, Orie, Afo, or Nkwo—lasts until the next sundown, when the cycle continues with the next market day.

  • Please note the difference between a new moon and a full moon. A new moon, which occurs when the moon aligns between the Earth and the sun, is not visible from Earth, appearing completely dark. Historically, the science of detecting a new moon was a sacred skill in ancient Igbo communities, taught only to select individuals. Today, we use astronomical instruments to accurately determine its occurrence. Each lunar cycle spans about 29.5 days, with a new moon marking the start of each month (Ọnwá) in the Igbo calendar. This phase represents a time for new beginnings and resetting energies, while the full moon provides a moment to strengthen and realign our energies.
