The OGBANJE Book Series: Why I’m Writing It + Complete Book List

As someone who grew up in a traditional Igbo family, spent much of my childhood in the village, and later explored many Igbo communities as an adult, I’ve encountered the Ogbanje phenomenon in ways that go far beyond what is commonly represented in African literature and media.

For a long time, I was disappointed by how narrowly Ogbanje stories were portrayed. When they did appear, they were often limited to the familiar story of a child who repeatedly dies and returns through birth. While this is one manifestation of Ogbanje, it is only one part of a much broader and more complex spiritual reality within Igbo worldview.

I wanted to see stories that explored these other dimensions, stories that felt closer to the experiences, beliefs, and spiritual realities I had encountered within Igbo communities. As a writer and storyteller, I eventually decided to create the stories I wanted to see.

That desire became the OGBANJE book series: a collection of interconnected fictional stories exploring different manifestations and perspectives of the Ogbanje phenomenon. After considering how best to share them, I decided on a series of short books that modern readers can easily pick up, explore, and enjoy.

The complete collection will feature 33 fictional titles, along with one additional nonfiction book compiling my notes and observations from years of research, practice, and focused study of the Ogbanje phenomenon within Igbo traditional worldview.
