How to Communicate Effectively With Your Spiritual Guides

In Odinani, the spiritual forces that guide, protect, accompany, and influence a person's life are generally referred to collectively as Ezumezu Mmuo, Ora Mmuo, or Oha Mmuo. There may be different spiritual forces within this collective with different relationships and responsibilities toward you, but for the purpose of this discussion, what matters is learning how to communicate with them properly.

A useful place to start is with understanding that there is a difference between telling your spiritual guides what is happening and actually asking them to help you.

People tend to overlook this distinction.

You may sit down and speak extensively about a problem you are having with your family, work, finances, relationship, or some decision you are trying to make. There is nothing wrong with this. In fact, sharing the ordinary details of your life is part of maintaining an active spiritual relationship. Your communication should not exist only when you desperately need something.

However, explaining a situation is not necessarily a request for intervention.

You might spend twenty minutes explaining how badly someone has treated you without once saying what you actually want your spiritual guides to do about it. Perhaps you want protection. Perhaps you want clarity about the person's intentions. Maybe you want help removing yourself from the situation peacefully. You might simply want the truth of the matter revealed.

Those are different requests, and it helps to actually state them.

Don't Leave Everything to Assumption

One principle I find useful in spiritual communication is the same principle that makes ordinary human communication better; do not assume that what you intended is automatically what you communicated.

Sometimes we believe we have been clear simply because the matter is clear inside our own heads.

It is better to communicate deliberately.

You can tell your Ọra Mmuo what has been happening, how you feel about it, what you understand so far, and then clearly state where you need assistance.

There is no need to make this theatrical. You are not trying to impress anybody with vocabulary. Speak naturally.

Something as straightforward as, “I don't understand why this keeps happening, and I need your help seeing what I am missing,” is already a complete request.

The objective is understanding, not performance.

Asking Also Clarifies Consent

Direct requests can serve another purpose within spiritual practice; they establish conscious consent for assistance or intervention in a particular matter.

This does not suggest that your spiritual guides are completely inactive unless you formally give them permission every morning. Protective and guiding relationships are more complex than that. The point is simply that consciously inviting assistance removes ambiguity on your end.

You have identified the matter and acknowledged that you want spiritual involvement in it.

This becomes particularly important when dealing with decisions where you genuinely want guidance rather than merely validation for something you have already decided to do.

There is a significant difference between asking your guides to bless whatever you want and asking them to help you recognize what is actually right for you.

Communication Should Aim at Understanding

A lot of unnecessary anxiety develops around the language of prayer and spiritual communication. People wonder whether they pronounced something correctly, used the right formula, spoke enough Igbo, or made their request sound sufficiently spiritual.

These things can matter in rituals where particular language and procedures have specific functions. Ordinary communication with your spiritual guides, however, does not need to become a linguistic performance.

Say what you mean.

A long prayer can be unclear. A short conversation can be remarkably precise.

What matters is that you understand what you are communicating and, where a particular spiritual practice requires established procedures, that you understand why those procedures are being used.

Different Forms of Communication Serve Different Purposes

Another mistake is expecting one method of spiritual communication to do everything.

Prayer, meditation, dreams, offerings, divination, ritual, and consultation with a knowledgeable Dibia do not necessarily perform the same function.

You might use prayer to communicate something directly, while meditation creates the quiet necessary for observation and reflection. Divination may be appropriate when a specific matter needs to be investigated according to an established system. Certain situations may call for ritual action, while others require nothing more complicated than sitting quietly and speaking sincerely.

Knowing which approach is appropriate is part of becoming spiritually mature.

There is little value in having many spiritual tools if you do not understand what each one is actually for.

Communication Includes Verification

Learning to communicate with your spiritual guides also means learning not to attribute everything to them.

This is probably one of the most important disciplines to develop.

Human beings have imagination, fear, desire, memory, intuition, biases, dreams, random thoughts, and emotional reactions. All of these continue existing simply because someone has become spiritually conscious.

So after asking for guidance, resist the temptation to turn the next unusual thing that happens into an answer.

Sometimes a dream deserves attention. Sometimes it was simply a dream. A sudden thought can contain useful intuition without necessarily being a spiritual instruction. Coincidences can be meaningful, but our minds are also naturally very good at finding patterns.

Important matters deserve patience and, when appropriate, confirmation through the methods recognized within your practice.

Spiritual discernment is not demonstrated by finding messages everywhere. Quite often it is demonstrated by knowing when not to call something a message.

Let Them Know You Outside Your Problems

Your Ora Mmuo should not hear from you exclusively during emergencies.

Talk about what is going well too. Acknowledge progress. Express gratitude. Speak about what you are building and what you hope to become. There can also be periods of quiet acknowledgement where nothing is being requested at all.

This changes the character of the relationship.

It stops becoming a cycle of crisis, request, relief, disappearance, and another crisis.

Over time you develop familiarity with your own spiritual practice, and that familiarity can make discernment easier because you are no longer desperately trying to establish communication only when frightened or emotionally overwhelmed.

Leave Room to Be Corrected

There is also wisdom in not making every request excessively specific.

Clarity is good, but clarity is different from trying to control the answer.

Suppose you desperately want a particular opportunity. You can certainly communicate that desire. At the same time, you can acknowledge that you may not see everything surrounding it.

You might ask for the opportunity to open if it genuinely serves your path, while also asking for whatever you are failing to notice to become clear.

That leaves room for guidance to actually be guidance.

Otherwise, spiritual practice can quietly become a way of asking unseen forces to endorse decisions we have already made.

Your Own Actions Remain Part of the Conversation

After communicating, continue participating in your own life.

Spiritual guidance does not eliminate ordinary responsibility. Sometimes the answer to a request becomes visible through a conversation you finally decide to have, information you take the time to investigate, a boundary you establish, or an opportunity you become prepared enough to recognize.

This is particularly important because people can become so focused on waiting for supernatural confirmation that they ignore perfectly useful information already available to them.

Communication with your spiritual guides should improve your ability to navigate life, not make you afraid to act without a sign.

To Sum It Up

Effective spiritual communication is not necessarily elaborate. It becomes effective when you stop relying on assumptions.

Share your life with your Ezumezu Mmuo because relationship requires communication. When you actually need assistance, say so plainly. When something needs clarification, use the appropriate means available within your practice instead of immediately deciding what an experience means.

Most importantly, learn the difference between speaking, requesting, receiving, and understanding. They are related, but they are not identical.

You can speak without making a request. You can receive an impression without understanding it correctly. You can ask for guidance while secretly being unwilling to hear anything except your preferred answer.

Good communication gradually closes those gaps.

The point is not to become someone who sees spiritual messages in everything. It is to develop a relationship with your Ora Mmuo in which you can communicate naturally, ask deliberately, listen patiently, and become increasingly discerning about what you understand in return.
