Nọdụ Anị (the Teaching of Rest)
Dear Readers,
In Igbo culture, one profound principle reigns supreme: duality. It's the understanding that life unfolds in both negative and positive phases, akin to the ebb and flow of tides. Nodu Ani in its demotic sense means to sit down, but in its literal form Nodu Ani means to ground ones self with the earth. As we navigate our journey with life, it's important for each of us to remember to ground ourselves with the earth, to make time to settle down and find ways to sync into the rhythm of life's cycles.
Take a moment to ponder two things: what does rest mean to you? and what is the opposite of rest? Drawing from the principle of polarity, we realize that even in our darkest moments, a glimmer of light can exist. It's about recognizing the inherent balance within ourselves and our surroundings. Learning to understand that the negative and postive side of things are interwined.
When life's challenges weigh heavy, it's essential to withdraw and recharge. Sit with the earth, connect with Mother Earth's (Ala’s) nurturing energy, and allow her wisdom to guide you. Just as the earth purifies and nourishes, so too can it cleanse our minds and spirits.
Incorporating moments of rest and reflection into our routines is vital for holistic wellbeing and spiritual growth. Nature teaches us that there is time for everything; a time to work and a time to rest. Whether it's dedicating time to commune with nature or picking out a day of the week to actively rest from all your “necessary” activities, taking control of our lives means prioritizing self-care and inner harmony.
So, dear readers, let us heed the wisdom of Ndi Igbo and embrace the duality (dual nature) of life. By recognizing both the negative and positive aspects with an open heart, we can unlock the path to liberation and fulfillment.
With love and light,
Oma 🌹
