Ichida Town Overview

Ichida is an Igbo town located in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State. It shares its borders with Adazi-Enu, Nnokwa, Oraeri, Igbo-Ukwu, Azigbo and Awka-Etiti.


Main Villages in Ichida

Although divided into smaller units today, the seven original ancestral villages of Ichida are:

  1. Ubulu

  2. Nnulukwu (Nne-ulukwu)

  3. Ihe

  4. Ajani

  5. Ezebazu

  6. Mgbudu

  7. Uhuanaudo

  • Alusi Nwaeke (Isi-Alusi Ichida)

  • Ogwugwu Ichida

Ichida has no rivers or streams.

Main Market Day

The main market day in Ichida is Orie, and the market itself is locally known as Oye-Ichida. Burials and other major public events that could interfere with market activities are prohibited throughout Ichida on Orie market days.


Major Festivals

  • Ikpoji Ichida Festival: Celebrated in August, this is the annual New Yam Festival of Ichida.

  • Afiolu Festival: An annual celebration in Ichida marking the end of the working (farming) season, it is held annually in October. It features performances by Ichida’s largest masquerades.


Communal Taboos

  • Murder

  • Incest

  • Sexual intercourse with a married woman

  • Killing or eating of Eke (python)

  • Abortion

  • Eating of Mbe (tortoise)

  • Women climbing palm-trees (Nkwu)

  • Women plucking kolanut (Oji) from its tree or picking it from the ground


Founder and History

The people of Ichida descend from Okotu, whose children also founded neighboring towns such as Adazi, Amichi, and Osumenyi.

Ichida is a part of Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria.
