Agulu is an Igbo town located in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State. It shares borders with Nri, Nise, Nanka, Adazi, Obeledu and Mbaukwu.

Main Market Day

The main market day in Agulu is Afo. The biggest market in the town, called Afo-Agulu, becomes very busy with buying and selling on every Afo day. Other smaller markets in the town include Nkwo Agulu, Oye Nneogidi, Oye Umuowelle and Nwagu market.

  • Onwa Agwu: This festival is celebrated by Agwu initiates in Agulu.

  • Agomchi Festival: This is a festival organized and performed by the women of Agulu.

  • Onwa Asaa Festival: This New Yam Festival of Agulu.

  • Abortion

  • Intercourse with a widow still in the mourning period

  • Harming or killing of Eke Mkpu (sacred python), Mbe (tortoise), and Disa (a type of monkey)

  • Harming or killing of Aguiyi (crocodiles) in the Agulu lake


Founder and History

According to oral history, the people of Agulu are descendants of a man named Agulu-gbuluenyimma, who originally migrated from the Aguleri area before establishing the present settlement.
