Ukwulu Town Overview

Ukwulu is an Igbo town located in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State. It shares borders with towns such as Igbariam, Nando, Ukpo, and Awkuzu.


Main Villages in Ukwulu‍ ‍

There are four main villages in Ukwulu:

  1. Umugama

  2. Adagbe

  3. Amagu

  4. Etiti/Amaegbu


Major Deities

The major deity venerated across Ukwulu is Alusi Akaete.

Main Market Day

Afo is the major market day in Ukwulu. The market is known as Afo-Ukwulu.


Major Festivals

  • Awam-Ji Ukwulu: This is the new yam festival of the Ukwulu people. It is celebrated every year in August. The Igwe of Ukwulu is the first to ceremonially eat the new yam of the season, after which the rest of the community follows.

  • Ofala Ukwulu: This festival is held immediately after the New Yam festival, usually in September every year.

  • Oriri Ede: This festival is celebrated in the sixth month of the Igbo calendar. During this celebration, the women of Ukwulu cook large quantities of Ede (cocoyam) and share with visitors. There are also community performances during the festival.


Communal Taboos

  • Killing of Eke (python). The python is the totem animal of the most revered deity in Ukwulu, Alusi Akaete.

  • Abortion

  • Incest

  • Murder


Founder and History

Ukwulu is the name of the town’s founder. He is said to be the son of a man called Dunukofia. Ukwulu had brothers from the same mother, who was the wife of Dunukofia named Obumma. These brothers include Ukpo and Ifite.


Major Occupations

Farming is the major occupation of Ukwulu indigenes.


Local Government Area

Ukwulu is part of Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria.
